Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplement

Spawning a multi-million dollar business companies have flooded the market with Omega-3 Fish Oil supplements. They are being touted as one of the best ways to increase the amount of omega-3s in our bodies. Is this true or are there other methods to get our omega-3s and the often forgotten omega-6s? You might be surprised at what is the most beneficial way to consume them for our health.

Why you should take Omega-3 fatty supplements

Omega-3s are shown to have a plethora of benefits in the human body. There have been many research studies conducted to support this claim.

Decreased risk of death

Omega-3 supplements help increase eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels in our bodies. According to a study conducted by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition low levels of EPA and DHA have been shown to increase the risk of death from all causes, as well as an increase in cognitive dysfunction.

Improve cardiovascular health

Studies indicate omega-3s have anti-arrhythmic properties. This means they can stop or offset the effects of cardiac arrhythmia. They are also shown to be anti-thrombotic which means they can prevent blood clots within a blood vessel. Omega-3s can also prevent atherosclerosis. This is a hardening of the artery walls caused by an increase in fatty deposits. Lastly, they are also shown to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Improved learning

Plos-One conducted a study in 2013 that showed low levels of DHA in school children was linked to lower reading scores and memory and behavioral problems in school-aged children. Another study conducted American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in August 2013 showed that omega-3 supplements can increase reading, learning, vocabulary, and intellectual testing in children ages 3 to 5.

How to increase your Omega-3 fats

There are two major sources of omega-3 available in nature; animal-based and plant based. The body does a better job at processing the animal based sources than it does the plant based sources. You would have to eat large amounts of the plant-based sources to equal just small amount of the easily digestible animal sources.

Fish

One of the best sources of omega-3 fats is fish. Unfortunately, with the unsafe levels of industrial toxins, pollutants, mercury, and radioactive isotopes eating too much fish can be hazardous to our health. It’s recommended to only eat fish two to three times a week. This is not enough to significantly increase your omega-3 fat levels.

Fish oil supplements

This is my recommended method of increasing your intake of omega-3 fats. Krill oil contains 48 times the antioxidants as regular fish-oil. It also utilizes an extremely sustainable method of harvesting. Krill are typically clean creatures found in the waters of the antarctic and feed on plankton floating on top of the water. Although krill oil has only 14% omega-3s it is more bio-available meaning it is more easily digest by the body. This means it typically doesn’t require as much to see the benefits.     Hey Jeff,
    very in depth article. I know what you mean when you talk about some fish being hazardous to your health. In the Pacific Islands some fresh fish can make you sick. My father said it was because of when the French use to do nuclear testing at Moruroa.
    Fish oil has such a wide range of beneficial factors to it. Not only is it good for the heart but can help with serious mental illnesses like Bipolar and Schizophrenia if it contains the right amount of EPA.
    I do have one question though. Does the Krill Oil cause those nasty fish burps as that can really put people off taking them.

      It’s very unfortunate that such a wonderful source of lean protein can be so dangerous. There are types available that are still healthy like Alaskan salmon but can be very expensive if you aren’t close to the source.

      As for the nasty fishy burps you certainly got a good laugh from me. I know exactly what you’re talking about. I believe this is a byproduct of the fish oil being processed or broken down higher up in the digestive system. The antioxidant properties found in krill oil help it digest lower down in the digestive track helping to prevent this smelly fate. Great question and thanks for the input, Jeff

    Hey Jeff, I love the article I know I need to have more omega-3 in my diet. I love fish, but with all that pollutes in our waters today, I won’t eat no more than once a week. What are the best Krill oil supplement can I use instead of fish?
